Legion of Super-Heroes #259 (Jan. 1980) is the first issue of the first series of an ongoing comic book series titled Legion of Super-Heroes. This was not the first Legion of Super-Heroes series, however. Legion of Super-Heroes volume 1 was published in 1973. It was simply a 4-issue series (or "limited series") that consisted entirely of previously published material. That 4-issue series re-published Legion stories that had originally appeared in Adventure Comics, alongside "Tommy Tomorrow" backup features that had originally appeared in Action Comics.

The Legion of Super-Heroes series that began running in 1980 was the first series by this title to present all-new material. Because of the existence of the 1973 series (which consisted purely of previously published material), this is volume 2.

Notably, this series does NOT begin at issue #1. Legion of Super-Heroes #259 directly continues from Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #258.

The series that began simply as Superboy in 1949 had featured the Legion of Super-Heroes alongside Superboy for many years, beginning with issue #197. The "official" title was not changed from Superboy until issue 231, but by then the Legion of Super-Heroes had already been part of the title as it appeared on the cover for over 30 issues.

Finally, with issue #259 of the series originally titled Superboy, this series was split into two separate series: Legion of Super-Heroes (which continued the numbering of the original series) and The New Adventures of Superboy, which began with a new issue #1.

Legion of Super-Heroes volume 2 would continue from issue #259 until issue #313, at which time the series changed its name to Tales of the Legion of Super-Heroes.
