Timecode: 6 minutes, 23 seconds: Offices of the Daily Planet Jimmy Olsen is trying to remember a phone number that a girl just told him.

Jimmy Olsen: 555-0648. 555-0648. 555-0648.

[Jimmy walks up to Lois Lane's desk and takes a pen out of her purse. He tries to write down the phone number.]

Jimmy Olsen: 555-0648. 555-0648.

[The "pen" Jimmy is trying to use does not write. Lois Lane hands Jimmy a pencil and he hands her the "pen." This "pen" is, in fact, not a pen at all. It is an advanced optical device which is central to this episode's plot. In the episode's opening scene, a scientist fleeing from another scientist from his same lab entered Lois Lane's apartment and used the optical device on her eyes. He then hid the device in a pen holder so the other people he had been working with would not find it. Lois later put what looked like a pen into her purse. She does not know yet what this device really is.]

Jimmy Olsen: [After Lois hands him a pencil.] Thank you. 555-0648.

[Lois tests the "pen" she retrieved from Jimmy on a piece of paper. It doesn't write. She tosses it into a nearby waste basket. Clark Kent sees Lois throw the "pen" into the waste basket. The look on his face shows he is rather annoyed to see her do this.]

Clark Kent: Why did you just throw that away?

Lois Lane: It doesn't work.

Clark Kent: Well, maybe it just needs a refill.

[Clark goes to the waste basket and retrieves the "pen."]

Lois Lane: No, it's probably disposable. Everything is.

Clark Kent: You know, that is one of the big problems with this world. Disposable products, disposable relationships, disposable lives. I mean, if everything is so expendable, what happens to friendship, to truth, to loyalty?

[Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane exchange glances. They think Clark is being a little extreme, or perhaps they just think he is being particularly "Clark-like."]

Lois Lane: It's a pen, Clark. But if you feel so strongly about it, be my guest. It's yours.

[Lois hands the "pen" back to Clark.]

Clark Kent: Thank you.

[As Clark walks away, Jimmy laughs. Lois rolls her eyes. Clark sits at his desk. With a satisfied look on his face, Clark looks at the "pen" and then puts the device into the pen holder on his own desk.]

Timecode: 8 minutes, 55 seconds: Assistant district attorney Mayson Drake enters the offices of the Daily Planet. She stopped by Lois Lane's apartment in the opening scene of this episode, to check to see if Lois was all right after unknown scientists entered her apartment and after one used the pen-like device to put Lois temporarily into a trance. Lois thinks that Mayson might be stopping by with follow-up questions. But Mayson has actually come on personal business: she wants to talk to Clark.]

Lois Lane: Hi, Mayson. Do you have more questions for me?

Mayson Drake: No.

[Mayson approaches Clark's desk, as he hangs up the phone and briefs Lois on the conversation he just had, a conversation relating to the story they are working on.]

Mayson Drake: Hi, Clark. Can I talk to you for a minute?

Clark Kent: Sure.

[Lois is also standing at Clark's desk. Mayson Drake gives Lois Lane a look that makes it clear that she wants to talk to Clark privately.]

Lois Lane: Oh, well, uh, if you'll excuse me, I have something to do . . . Over there.

[Lois walks away. Clark stands up to talk to Mayson.]

Mayson Drake: I know you're a really nice guy, Clark, and I don't mean to be forward, but . . . I really like you.

Clark Kent: I like you too, Mayson.

Mayson Drake: Good, that makes this easier. I have a cabin in the mountains. I was gonna go up for the weekend, leaving tomorrow after work, and I was wondering if you'd like to join me.

[Jimmy Olsen is walking by while Mayson asks her question. Jimmy overhears. From behind Mayson's back, Jimmy mouths the words "yes" and indicates to Clark that he should go for it.]

Jimmy clearly understands what Mayson has in mind. Jimmy realizes that Mayson is interested in becoming sexually intimate with Clark. Jimmy, whose sexual morals and ethics are considerably "looser" than Clark's, sees nothing wrong with Mayson's proposal and, in fact, thinks that Clark should definitely avail himself of this opportunity.

Clark Kent sighs and does not say anything immediately. The look on his face shows that he had not planned on this. He may be a little surprised. But Clark is experienced enough with other people to know that many people, particularly here in the big city of Metropolis, do not share the moral and religious values he was raised with and which he still holds to. Clark finds Mayson Drake attractive, but engaging in the type of intimate behavior she is suggesting - with a person he has known for such a short time - is really not the way he works. He knows he will have to talk his way out of this, but wants to do so in a way that will not embarrass Mayson or hurt their friendship.

On the other hand, Clark is flattered, and there is a part of him that is interested in taking her up on her offer. Clark knows that Mayson is attracted to him as Clark, and she is not interested in Superman. This is the opposite of Lois Lane, and this intrigues him. Mayson makes him feel valued for who he is inside, not just what he can do because he is Kryptonian.

[As Mayson continues her conversation with Clark, we can see that Lois, from her desk, is watching them and probably over-hearing what they say.]

Mayson Drake: Don't answer me now, just hear me out.

[Lois Lane's phone rings. She picks it up and answers, giving her name. She may be unable to hear the rest of the conversation between Mayson and Clark because she is talking on the phone.]

Mayson Drake: It's cold this time of year, but there's a fireplace and a woodburning stove. Indoor plumbing. Hot water. It's rustic . . .

[With his super-hearing, Clark can hear that Lois is frightened by what she hears in her phone conversation. Clark starts to focus his attention only on Lois Lane's phone conversation. She was called by one of the scientists who entered her apartment the night before while chasing Dr. Faraday. The man sounds threatening over the phone. Mayson continues talking to Clark, pitching her invitation to join her in her cabin in the mountains. Clark really isn't paying much attention to her.]

Lois Lane: [speaking on phone] Lois Lane . . . Who is this?

Man on other end of phone: Never mind who I am. If you wanna know about Dr. Faraday, come to Metropolitan Park, east of the pond. Come now, and come alone. If you bring anybody with you, you will learn nothing.

[Lois Lane hangs up the phone and gets up to leave. She really does want information about Dr. Faraday, the man who entered her room the night before and put her into a trance. Mayson Drake is still talking to Clark, but Clark probably doesn't know what she has said for the last few moments, so intent was he on listening to Lois Lane's phone call. Viewers could hear Mayson Drake was speaking, but her words were unintelligible. All we know is that she was continuing to explain about the weekend she has planned.]

Clark Kent: [interrupting Mayson to catch Lois before she leaves.] Something important?

Lois Lane: No. No. No, nothing as important as, uh, whatever you and Mayson are talking about.

Mayson Drake: So how about it? I'll pick you up tomorrow after work?

Clark Kent: That sounds great, Mayson--

[Clark starts to continue his sentence by saying, "but..." and then giving her an excuse as to why he can't make it. But then Perry White enters the room and interrupts their conversation.]

Perry White: Hey, Mayson. How you doing? How's the investigation going?

[Mayson and Perry talk about the investigation briefly. Perry goes off on a tangent and starts tellling a story. Mayson gets a page on her electronic pocket pager. She rushes off, leaving Perry to tell his story to Clark. Clark is thus left with an unintended weekend date with Mayson Drake - at least that's what Mayson thinks the plan is. What will Clark do? Clearly spending the weekend in a cabin with Mayson Drake is not what he wants to do, given the fact that he is in love with Lois Lane, and given his own strict moral values.]

Timecode: 18 minutes, 3 seconds: Lois Lane was about to tell Jimmy Olsen the secret of women. But then she receives a phone call, which interrupts her, and she forgets what she was going to tell Jimmy. He is disappointed.

Perry White: Huh. Well, it's just not like Clark to be late without calling in.

Jimmy Olsen: Maybe he left early on his weekend date. If I had a babe l like that Mayson Drake after me, I'd leave early.

Perry White: Well, you probably would, Jimmy. But it's not Clark's style to go chasing after some babe.

Lois Lane: "Babe." Would you two use some other word besides "babe"? I don't thinkshe is such a babe, anyway.

[Lois is feeling jealous.]

Perry White: Lois, you think you could find him for me, please?

Lois Lane: I have something else to do, Perry. Besides, Jimmy's probably right. Men just seem to get all feeble-minded when a kind-of-attractive woman bats their eyes at them. Even Clark.

[Lois Lane has arrived at her apartment to find that the two men she met in the park - the men who used a device to blind Superman - are there. The two men (one a scientist and the other a hired thug) are pretending to be scientists from STAR Labs who have come to check Superman out, to see if there is anything they can do to cure his blindness. What Superman doesn't know is that they are the ones who caused his blindness in the first place. They have come to Lois Lane's apartment to look for the device that Dr. Faraday left there - the pen-like optical device. It is a one-of-a-kind prototype that they desperately want to get back. When Lois Lane enters her apartment and sees the two men, she immediately tells the blind Superman that they are the men from the park. Superman isn't much use in apprehending them. They run away (after Lois Lane slugs one of them down).]

Timecode: 25 minutes, 7 seconds:

Superman: Lois?

Lois Lane: Yeah, Superman. I'm okay. No, I'm not. I'm mad. I'm furious. It's always the same thing. Where is Clark Kent when anybody needs him?

Superman: Lois, I'm sure he--

Lois Lane: You know, he's supposed to be your friend, but is he here for you? Is he here for me?

Superman: I'm sure there's a perfectly rational explanation--

Lois Lane: No! His two best friends could really use his help right now, and where is he?

Superman: If he could be here--

Lois Lane: He's in the mountains with Mayson Drake.

[Superman's face looks pained. He says nothing further. End of scene.]

Clark is NOT, in fact, in the mountains with Mayson Drake, as Lois Supposes. Clark is secretly Superman, and he is right there with Lois. But Superman can't tell her this, lest Lois discover Superman's secret identity.

Timecode: 26 minutes, 2 seconds: Clark Kent's parents - Martha and Jonathan Kent - are at the door to his apartment. Martha is trying to pick to lock to his door so they can get in, and she is not having any success.

Martha Kent: I'm not doing very well. You wanna try?

Jonathan Kent: I have absolutely no idea how to pick a lock.

[Suddenly Jimmy Olsen arrives on the scene.]

Jimmy Olsen: Oh, you just have to align the tumblers to the shear point.

Jonathan Kent: Oh, well, that would be fine, if I had a clue what "shear point" means.

Martha Kent: Where the tumblers open up to the top of the cylinder. But understanding that and doing that are two different things.

Jonathan Kent: Hey, you want me to give it a go?

Martha Kent: Oh, please. Thanks.

Martha Kent: Yeah, sure.

Jonathan Kent: Well, he called and said he needed some help with something. And ordinarily we'd just stay here until he came home, but it's cold and Martha's been reading a book about, uh, locks, so . . .

Jimmy Olsen: You locked, right?

Jonathan Kent: Oh, yeah, sure.

Martha Kent: Sure.

Jimmy Olsen: You know, I think maybe you guys should prepare yourself for, um, uh . . . Well, I don't think Clark's gonna be here this weekend. Perry wanted me to come over and look for him, but it's a waste of time.

Jonathan Kent: What are you saying, Jimmy?

Jimmy Olsen: Well, um . . . Clark's gone off with a date? Maybe I shouldn't say anything. I just-- I just think knowing is better than sitting around all weekend not knowing, right?

[Jimmy Olsen is a well-trained lock pick. While he was talking to Clark's parents he easily picked the door to Clark's apartment. Now he turns the handle and pushes the door open.]

Jonathan Kent: Thanks.

Timecode: 27 minutes, 53 seconds: Superman is still blind, still staying in Lois Lane's apartment while he is in this condition.

Lois Lane: I just don't know what to do when I see you feeling for the furniture or the wall. I don't know if I should help you or if I should let you figure it out yourself. I mean, I don't wanna make you feel--

Superman: Helpless? Dependent? Clumsy?

Lois Lane: Thanks for keeping it light.

Superman: I don't like this. I do feel helpless and dependent and clumsy. But you have to play the hand that you've been dealt. If this blindness turns out to be permanent . . . well, then I'll have to figure out how to be the best blind person I can. Because I really do believe that we're all put here on this earth - or whatever planet we're put on - to do better than we think we can . . . to be kind, helpful, generous and forgiving.

Perry White: Oh ho ho!

Jimmy Olsen: Ha! C.K. is so cool. And that Mayson Drake, I mean, she is gorgeous!

[Perry notices that Mayson Drake herself is approaching from behind Jimmy. He tries to stop him from speaking about her lest she hear.]

Perry White: [whispering] Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy.

Mayson Drake: Hi, is Clark around?

[Perry White and Jimmy Olsen are both stunned to see Mayson Drake. Only second before, they were certain that Mayson was already up in the mountains with Clark Kent on the romantic date that Mayson had planned. Now they realize this is not the case, but they don't quite understand what is going on.]

Jimmy Olsen: We thought he was with you.

Perry White: No, he's not around, Mayson.

Mayson Drake: Hmm. Maybe I misunderstood when I was supposed to pick him up . . . Do you know when he'll be back?

Perry White: Uh . . . No, I don' t think I do. No, Mayson, I don't know when he'll be back.

Mayson Drake: You're trying to be nice, aren't you? You're trying not to have to tell me that I've been stood up.

Lois Lane: Hi.
