Among the many troubles Spider-Man continues to face in this issue is a $5 million bounty being offered by the Daily Bugle for the secret identity of Spider-Man. An "anonymous billionaire" provided the money to the Bugle in order to make this offer. The identity of this billionaire is not yet revealed, but Spider-Man is certain that the person - whoever they are - did this simply to torment him. On page 10, Spider-Man thinks to himself: "What is it with these people and this stupid competition? And who the Hell ponied up the five million dollars just to make my life even more of a misery?"

The identity of the "anonymous billionaire" will not be revealed until the next issue, when it is revealed that Mac Gargan (a.k.a. Scorpion) anonymously provided J. Jonah Jameson with the money.
