For most LGBT fictional characters, as with most LGBT people in real life, LGBT is NOT a "religion" but only refers to sexual preference. However, for a small minority of LGBT characters (as with a small minority of LGBT people), LGBT really is their "religion." LGBT is their religion not in the narrow theocentric sense in which the word is sometimes used, but in the broader, more general sense of "religion." Being LGBT or the LGBT sub-culture is their principle (or only) significant characteristic or worldview. LGBT is the overriding lens through which they are depicted. Such characters are typically one-dimensional and often created as caricatures or for satirical/humorous purposes. So, while it is true that LGBT is not a "religion" for most real-world LGBT people (who may identify as Buddhist or Episcopalian or agnostic or any other religious identity), some fictional LGBT characters, such as John Byrne's "Gay Guy," can not realistically be said to have any religion other than "LGBT." It is characters such as these whose religion is categorized purely as "LGBT", not characters who identifiably have more traditionally recognized religious affiliations, yet just happen to be LGBT. (Note that "LGBT" is known alternatively by a number of other appellations, including GLBT and LGBTQ.)
