The Peoples Temple, which relocated from multiple locations in the United States (primarily California) to Jonestown, Guyana, was officially affiliated with the Disciples of Christ. The Disciples of Christ is the most significant contemporary liberal religious body descended from the Stone-Campbell Restoration Movement. Despite the fact that the Peoples Temple was officially a branch of this "mainstream" (or "mainline") Protestant denomination, we have created a separate category for it. Peoples Temple leader Jim Jones was, by his own account, an atheist who sought to use affiliation with a "mainstream" Protestant church to espouse his own Marxist Communist philosophies. The teachings, practices and history of the Peoples Temple are thus sufficiently divergent from the main Disciples of Christ religious body (however liberal it may be) to warrant separation into its own category.
